The Foothills Open Learning Centre, situated in Salem, Tamil Nadu, is revolutionizing the landscape of open education with its commitment to accessibility, flexibility, and a sustainable future. Embracing diverse learning styles through online resources, the school creates a dynamic and inclusive environment for students. One of the distinctive features of the Foothills Open Learning Centre is its commitment to eco-friendly initiatives. The school building itself is a testament to this commitment, constructed using mud in a special architectural design that maximizes the inflow of natural light and air. This not only creates a sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure but also provides a conducive atmosphere for learning. A standout feature of the Foothills Open Learning Centre is its environmentally conscious initiatives, including a 10 kg biogas plant provided by Green Connect. This innovative plant transforms food waste into clean cooking gas, addressing both waste management and sustainable energy needs. Operating without electricity, the biogas plant produces approximately 1 cubic
meter of biogas daily, equivalent to half a kilogram of LPG.This renewable energy source is efficiently utilized for cooking purposes within the school In addition to the biogas plant, the Foothills Open Learning Centre has integrated a DEWATS wastewater treatment plant into its infrastructure. Installed by Green Connect, this system operates electricity-free and efficiently treats wastewater generated within the school premises. On a daily basis, around 500 liters of wastewater are treated, ensuring responsible water management practices. The treated water, in turn, is utilized for maintaining the schools lush garden, completing the cycle of sustainability. The Foothills Open Learning Centre sets a commendable standard for educational institutions, seamlessly integrating sustainability into its core values and operations. By partnering with Green Connect, the school not only exemplifies a commitment to quality education but also emerges as a model for institutions striving to balance educational excellence with environmental responsibility.
