BPCL Initiates Compressed Biogas Plants in Raipur and Bhilai

State-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has embarked on a significant initiative to set up compressed biogas (CBG) plants in Raipur and Bhilai, solidifying a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) and the municipal corporations of both cities.

Each plant, with an investment of Rs 100 crore, is poised to utilize 200 to 250 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste daily for biofuel production, boasting a total capacity of 100-150 tonnes per day (TPD).

This endeavor not only promises environmental benefits but also economic opportunities, with the construction phase expected to generate about 60,000 man-days of employment annually in Chhattisgarh. Additionally, upon reaching full operational capacity, the state stands to gain Rs 20 lakh per annum in GST revenue from the sale of CBG.

The plants will not only produce CBG but also organic fertilizer as a co-product, fostering organic farming practices. Moreover, this initiative aligns with Chhattisgarh’s Green War Room efforts to combat air pollution.

BPCL’s nationwide ambition includes the establishment of 5,000 CBG plants by 2023-24, aiming to produce 15 million tonnes of CBG annually. This strategic move is anticipated to enhance access to affordable transport fuels, promote the efficient utilization of agricultural residue, cattle dung, and municipal waste, while providing an additional revenue stream for farmers.

The collaboration between BPCL, CBDA, and municipal authorities underscores a concerted effort towards sustainable energy solutions and environmental stewardship.
