Empowering Sustainable Change: CSI Balar Gnana Illam’s Journey with Biogas

CSI Balar Gnana Illam, a remarkable institution in Salem, is home to over 120 intellectually challenged children. The school has been a beacon of hope and support, providing a nurturing environment for these children to grow and thrive. However, like many institutions, it faced challenges in managing its operational costs, particularly with its energy consumption. The school used to consume approximately 14-15 LPG cylinders each month, a significant expense that strained its budget.

The turning point came with the installation of an 8-cubic-meter Green Connect biogas plant on the campus which is sponsored by Rotary club salem in 2012 and its been 12 years now. This innovative solution, which converts food and vegetable waste into biogas, has revolutionized their energy management. By simply utilizing the waste generated on-site, the school now saves around 7 cylinders of LPG every month. This substantial reduction not only alleviates financial pressure but also contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly campus.

The benefits of this biogas project extend beyond just cost savings. The institution has embraced a greener lifestyle, reducing its carbon footprint and promoting environmental awareness among its staff and students. The children and caregivers have taken pride in their contribution to sustainability, transforming waste into a valuable resource.

Reflecting on their journey, the staff and management of CSI Balar Gnana Illam express a mixture of happiness and regret. They are thrilled with the positive changes that the biogas plant has brought a sense of missed opportunity for not having implemented it sooner. Their story serves as an inspiring example for other institutions, highlighting the significant impact of sustainable practices on both the environment and operational efficiency.
