Jain College, located in Chennai, has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by installing a Green Connect biogas plant in 2024. This initiative stems from the college’s commitment to both environmental stewardship and the pursuit of NAAC accreditation.
Even though Jain College has a smaller student population and less food waste in their hostel, 100 people generate about 30 kilograms of food waste daily. The college was committed to managing this waste in an eco-friendly way. They decided to partner with Green Connect, a company known for its expertise in sustainable practices.
Jain College worked with Green Connect to install a biogas plant that could handle all their daily food waste. This plant, with a 2 cubic meter capacity, can process 30 kilograms of food waste each day, turning it into biogas. The biogas produced is equivalent to about 1 kilogram of LPG, helping the college meet its environmental goals while efficiently managing waste. Green Connect recommended a cost-effective solution.
the High Pressure Model Biogas Plant. This choice proved successful, efficiently converting the college’s food waste into biogas, which serves as an alternative energy source for their canteen.
The implementation of the Green Connect biogas plant has yielded multiple benefits for Jain College. Firstly, it addresses the environmental concerns associated with food waste disposal by converting it into a valuable resource. Secondly, the biogas generated provides a sustainable energy source, reducing the college’s reliance on conventional fuels. Moreover, the process produces nutrient-rich slurry, which is utilized for gardening purposes, further contributing to the college’s green initiatives.
Beyond the environmental advantages, the installation of the biogas plant aligns with Jain College’s aspirations for NAAC accreditation. Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices enhances the institution’s overall profile and underscores its dedication to social responsibility
