What is “GASTODAY “?

GASTODAY is an equipment that produces cooking gas from leftover food/vegetable/organic waste through the process of anaerobic bacterial digestion. In simple terms, the organic waste is degraded biologically, and biogas which is produced as output, is used for cooking.

Why “GASTODAY”?

Today there is an increased need for alternate energy and waste management. “GASTODAY” has a gateway to address both. By using “GASTODAY” you can produce your cooking fuel, organic manure and also save the environment from pollution!

Organic wastes that can be fed inside GASTODAY

Digester

The digester is a sealed, oxygen-free container where the anaerobic digestion process occurs. Inside the digester, microorganisms break down the organic matter in the food waste, producing biogas—a mixture primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide. The digester is designed to maintain optimal conditions for the microorganisms, including appropriate temperature, pH, and retention time, to maximize biogas production.

Food waste inlet

The food waste inlet is the entry point where organic waste, such as food scraps and kitchen waste, is introduced into the biogas plant. This inlet is designed to allow easy and efficient feeding of the waste into the system, ensuring that the material can be properly processed in the digester.

Biogas Outlet

The biogas outlet is the exit point from the digester where the produced biogas is released. This outlet is connected to a transportation system. The biogas collected here is a renewable energy source that is used for cooking.

Biogas line

The biogas line is a pipeline that carries the biogas from the digester to the point of use(biogas stove). The line is typically made of durable materials to safely transport the gas under low pressure.

Biogas Stove

The biogas stove is an appliance specifically designed to burn biogas efficiently. It converts the biogas into a controlled flame, which can be used for cooking or heating. The stove is designed to optimize combustion, providing a clean and efficient cooking experience while reducing reliance on conventional fuels like LPG or wood.

Manure outlet

The manure outlet is the discharge point where the digested material, known as digestate, exits the biogas plant. This digestate is rich in nutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer or soil conditioner. The outlet is designed to facilitate easy collection and handling of this valuable byproduct, which supports sustainable agricultural practices.

What types of waste can be used in GASTODAY?
GASTODAY can process a variety of organic waste, including leftover food, vegetable peels, fruit scraps, and other biodegradable materials. It’s ideal for households, restaurants, and small businesses that produce organic waste.
How much biogas can GASTODAY produce?

The amount of biogas produced depends on the volume and type of organic waste input. On average, it can produce enough gas to meet a household’s daily cooking needs, but exact figures can vary.

Is the biogas produced safe for cooking?

Yes, the biogas produced by GASTODAY is safe for cooking. It burns cleanly and efficiently, similar to traditional cooking gas, but with a lower environmental impact.

Does GASTODAY produce a bad smell?

No, GASTODAY does not produce any bad smell. This is due to the anaerobic digestion process, which is odor-free because it takes place in a fully sealed system. Pneumatic pipes prevent leaks, ensuring no gas escapes. While there may be a brief gas smell when the stove is initially turned on, it dissipates quickly once the stove is lit, leaving no lingering odor.

Can the GASTODAY plant burst because it contains biogas?

No, the GASTODAY plant is designed to prevent any risk of bursting. Biogas is lighter than air, so it will safely disperse if there is a minor leak. Additionally, biogas requires a high ignition temperature of 700°C, meaning it won’t catch fire easily from a small spark. Since the gas is stored at low pressure in free form, the risk of explosion is extremely low, making GASTODAY a safe system for biogas storage.

Do I need to remove waste from the GASTODAY plant daily?

Daily waste removal is not necessary with GASTODAY. Simply add food waste through the inlet, and any excess digestate is expelled through an outlet pipe. This expelled digestate serves as nutrient-rich manure, so the system effectively self-cleans, allowing you to “fit and forget” without daily maintenance or waste disposal requirements.

Does GASTODAY require high maintenance?

GASTODAY requires minimal maintenance, making it a convenient option for households. Daily food waste is added to the plant, which then produces a slurry output that can be used as manure or directed to drainage. The stove may need occasional cleaning, and the water trap should be drained every 15 days to ensure smooth operation, but overall, upkeep is straightforward and manageable.

Should I add cow dung daily when feeding the GASTODAY plant?

No, adding cow dung daily is not necessary. Cow dung is only required at the beginning to start the digestion process, as it introduces beneficial bacteria for anaerobic digestion. After the initial setup, regular food waste is enough to sustain gas production, making the process simple and efficient without the need for frequent cow dung addition.

Can the GASTODAY plant be damaged easily?

GASTODAY is built to be highly durable, using LLDPE material, which is the same material used in overhead water tanks. This means it can withstand exposure to sunlight and is resistant to wear and tear. It has even been drop-tested from a height of one story, sustaining only minor scratches with no significant damage, proving its strength and longevity.

What should I do if I haven’t used the GASTODAY plant for a long time?

If the plant has been unused for up to two weeks, you can simply resume adding food waste, and gas production will restart the following day. For periods longer than two weeks, you’ll need to add a mixture of 50kg cow dung and water (in a 1:1 ratio) to kickstart the digestion process again. This quick restart method ensures that the plant is back to regular operation quickly.

Does GASTODAY produce manure?

Yes, GASTODAY produces high-quality manure as a by-product. The digestate from the plant is rich in NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) with a ratio of 1:2:2, which is ideal for plant growth. By feeding the plant with 2 kg of food waste daily, you receive 2 kg of nutrient-rich manure that can be directly used in gardening or farming applications.

Does the manure from GASTODAY take a long time to be ready?

No, manure is produced on a daily basis, making it instantly available for use. Unlike traditional compost, which can take weeks or even months to mature, GASTODAY’s fertilizer is ready immediately after each feeding. This provides you with a convenient and continuous supply of organic fertilizer whenever you add food waste to the plant.

What types of food waste can be added to GASTODAY?

GASTODAY can handle a variety of food waste, including rice, stale fruits and vegetables, peels, starch water, curries, chicken, mutton, fish, curd, milk, tea residue, and coffee grounds. This flexibility makes it easy to dispose of common kitchen waste, while also turning it into useful biogas and fertilizer.

Are there any types of waste that should not be added to GASTODAY?

Avoid adding dry food waste, citric fruits, and large bones from meat to GASTODAY. These materials are either too acidic or difficult to break down, which can disrupt the anaerobic digestion process. Sticking to soft, organic kitchen waste ensures that GASTODAY runs smoothly and efficiently.

Does GASTODAY require a lot of space?

No, GASTODAY is designed for compact spaces and requires only a 4ft x 4ft area. Its small footprint allows it to be placed easily in backyards or other limited outdoor spaces, making it a suitable solution for both urban and rural homes.

How long can I cook daily using GASTODAY?

GASTODAY provides sufficient biogas for up to 1 hour of cooking daily. This is typically enough for regular household cooking needs and makes it an excellent renewable energy source for daily meal preparation.

Can I use an LPG stove with GASTODAY?

No, GASTODAY requires a specialized stove with larger burner holes to burn biogas effectively. Unlike LPG stoves, which have smaller holes, GASTODAY stoves are designed to allow biogas to flow smoothly and burn efficiently. Using the correct stove type ensures optimal performance and safe operation with biogas.
