In the heart of the Hebbal Industrial Area in Karnataka lies the once vibrant Hebbal Lake, a 40-acre water body that was, at one time, a crucial source of potable water for the surrounding community. However, rapid urbanization took its toll on the lake, leading to its gradual decline. The inflow of untreated sewage from residential and industrial areas tarnished its pristine beauty, leaving it in a sorry state. Recognizing the need for environmental stewardship, Infosys Limited, a global leader in technology services and consulting, collaborated with local authorities – Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) and Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) – to embark on a transformative project to rejuvenate Hebbal Lake.
The ambitious project, with a total expenditure of INR 36.76 crore, goes beyond mere beautification. It encompasses a comprehensive approach to restore the lake’s ecosystem and safeguard its surroundings. A critical component of the initiative involves the construction of a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant (STP) near the lake. With a capacity to treat 8 million liters of sewage daily, the STP deploys advanced membrane bio-reactor technology to ensure that only the highest quality of treated water is discharged into the lake.
One of the distinctive features of this CSR initiative is the emphasis on automation in the sewage treatment process. By minimizing manual intervention, Infosys aims to guarantee a consistently high-quality treatment, reducing the margin for human error. The introduction of cutting-edge technologies not only enhances the efficiency of the project but also sets a precedent for future environmental conservation endeavors.
Apart from the technical aspects, Infosys is actively involved in the physical restoration of Hebbal Lake. Desilting and beautification efforts are underway, including the creation of a picturesque walking path and the strategic planting of trees around the lake. The holistic approach to the project aligns with Infosys’ commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).
In the financial year 2019-20, Infosys allocated a substantial sum of INR 359.56 crore towards its prescribed CSR, emphasizing its dedication to social and environmental causes. The Hebbal Lake rejuvenation project stands as a testament to the company’s vision of leveraging technology for positive societal impact. Beyond the immediate benefits to the Hebbal community, Infosys envisions this initiative as a model for similar projects that administrative bodies nationwide can adopt to rejuvenate and conserve their natural resources. As Infosys continues to lead in technology services globally, its commitment to sustainable and responsible practices shines brightly through initiatives like the Hebbal Lake project.
